Brainstorming for Your Next Write Up: 4 Tips By Joseph Woodward

A note pad and pen for brainstorming ideas

From characters, setting, time period consideration, and theme, you have to take several factors into consideration when coming up with a gripping storyline. Whether you’re planning to write your first book or forty-fifth, the brainstorming process somewhat remains the same. Brainstorming helps increase a writer’s productivity and overcome writer’s block.

Joseph Woodward, a famous biographical fiction author, has shared his top five tips to help writers brainstorm new ideas.

1.   Answer a Series of Questions

Here are some questions that can help you come up with creative ideas during your brainstorming session.

  • What genre do you want to write on?
  • Who will be the main characters?
  • What tone do you think will work best?
  • Will it be a period piece?

Answering these questions will help you create a character board, come up with the storyline, and eventually, an actionable writing plan.

Jotting down questions acts as a catalyst in an author’s writing process. You can always refer back to these questions to come up with a captivating storyline.

2.   Invest Adequate Time

Writers should never rush through the brainstorming process. This task can take several weeks or even months. If you’re procrastinating, a great way to optimize the process is to spend at least sixty uninterrupted minutes brainstorming.

Don’t limit yourself when thinking about new plot connections and twists.

3.   Post-It Brainstorming

A great brainstorming session always includes post-its. Create an idea wall or board in your writing space. Start by writing whatever comes to your mind on sticky notes and secure them onto the board.

Once you’ve jotted down all your ideas, step away, and take a look at the board. Try creating logical connections between different ideas to create a rich storyline.

4.   Try Freewriting

Freewriting is a popular brainstorming technique used by famous writers worldwide. This exercise helps you empty out your brain and make more room for new ideas.

When trying out this strategy, don’t hesitate to write down the worst ideas. Let your brain wander to unknown plot points, which may even lead to unexpected surprises.
