4 Types of Materials to Use for Subflooring

Subfloors are the lowest layer of floors. They’re the foundation and provide the base for the rest of the structure.  If you choose poor-quality subflooring materials, you’ll be dealing with frequent issues and repairs. Subflooring repairs aren’t cheap either; they cost about 500 to 1000 USD for a room.

Here are some quality materials you can use when it comes to subflooring.

Wood Planks

Wood planks used to be the most common type of subflooring used in houses till the 1950s. After which, they were mostly substituted with plywood. They’re made from softwood like pine and fir.

They’re fixed by being nailed to wooden joists. Joists are structures that span space, like a frame. Being nailed makes wooden planks susceptible to creaking and loosening over time.

Houses that use wooden planks as subflooring today cover them with hardboard to provide an even surface for the upper layers.

Plywood has been the most common subflooring material since the middle of the last century. Plywood planks are glued to floor joists with industrial adhesive, and they can also be nailed to the joists as an extra measure.

Plywood is less prone to water damage and has a small thermal expansion coefficient, so it’s suitable for extreme weather. It’s affordable and is easily installed, but it won’t increase the value of a home compared to other floorings.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB)

OSBs are made of wood chips compressed in multiple layers. Its composition makes it cheaper than plywood, but it has a more uniform surface. OSB is best kept away from moisture because the edges swell up quickly, but generally, it’s more water-resistant than plywood.

OSB is flexible, so it can’t hold heavy flooring materials like stone tiles. Overall, OSB is a good and affordable subfloor material.

Structural Panel Cement Boards

Cement boards are used for subfloors when the upper layer is tiled. Cement boards are durable; they don’t expand and contract too much when the temperature fluctuates and are a hard surface that supports tiles above them.
